September 4th,
2006
- Congratulations to the Blue Earth Pirates
on winning the 2006 Class C State Championship!

A home run in the top of the eighth
tied the game for Union Hill.
The Skis State Tournament run has ended with
a loss to the Union Hill Bulldogs 4-3 in eleven
innings. The game ended when Scott Geiger
was called for interference on a slide into second base
on a double play attempt. There was one out in the
bottom of the eleventh and Geiger was on first when Joe
Thoma grounded a check swing back to the
pitcher. The pitcher threw to second for the
second out and the throw to first was wild allowing
Thoma to reach and seemingly keep the inning alive for
the Skis. However, the home plate umpire called
Thoma out as a result of Geiger's slide into second base
attempting to break up the double play. It was a
tough way to end a season for a team.
The game was resumed in the bottom of the second from a
rain out the day earlier with the Skis leading, batting,
a runner on first and no outs. The Skis held the
lead 2-0 on a 2-run homer from Jon Czech the
previous day. To start play today Beau Hanowski
sacrificed the runner to second which was followed
by a Brad Czech double scoring the run and
putting the Skis up 3-0. The Skis had trouble
getting anything going from that point on and couldn't
manage any more runs. Scott Geiger went the
distance on the mound for the Skis in a two day event.
The Skis end the season with a division championship, a
divisional playoff title, the region 8C title and a
fourth place finish in the State Tournament, their best
finish in the State Tournament to date.
Congratulations to the Skis on a great season!

Simon Waltman went the distance in
the night cap for the Skis victory.
The Skis get another win in the State Tourney
defeating the the Diamond Devils of Maple Plain 8-5 in a
wild one. Fueled by a number of errors, hit
batters, and walks from the Maple Plain pitching the
Skis built a 7-0 lead before giving a few runs back in
the eight and ninth with a few errors of their own.
The Skis play the Union
Hill Bulldogs for the second time in the tourney in an elimination game tomorrow
at 1:30 in Miesville. The Skis beat the Bulldogs
3-1 in the third round of the State Tournament.

Pinch runner Peter Suska is thrown
in at the plate in the bottom of the fifth.
The Skis drop their first game of the State Tournament
to a very good Blue Earth team. The final was 5-3
when a ninth inning rally came up short.
The Skis fell behind in the top of the sixth 1-0 on an
error by the pitcher Jason King when the Pirate
batter bunted one back to the mound on a squeeze play
with two outs. King bobbled the ball before
throwing to first giving the batter just enough time to
reach safely and the run to score. Another Skis error in the top of the
seventh helped the Pirates score two more making the
score 3-0, Blue Earth. The Skis got two back in the bottom of the
inning on a big 2-run double by Jon Czech.
Not to be out done, the Pirates answered right back scoring
another two runs in the top of the eighth with a couple
hits and a walk and a sacrifice fly. After a scoreless bottom of the
eight and top of the ninth the Skis needed three in the
last half inning to extend the game.
The inning started with two batters in a row being hit
by a pitch, Aaron
Hennes and Nathan Olson were plunked putting
runners on first and second with no outs. Jon
Czech came to the plate and lined a base hit to left
center which plated Hennes and moved Olson to
second. After a strike out,
draftee Scott Geiger came to the plate with one
out and the runners still on first and second.
Scott hit a high fly ball to right center that looked
like it was going to be caught and Olson was set to tag
up from second to third when the ball dropped between
the two fielders. That loaded the bases with one
out. The game ended in the next at bat when Joe
Thoma hit a grounder back to the pitcher who started
the 1-2-3 double play.
The Skis will now play the Maple
Plain Diamond Devils in an elimination game tomorrow night
at 7:30 in Miesville. The Skis lost to the Diamond
Devils earlier this year in the Coors Hamburg Classic by
the score of 1-0 in 10 innings.

- If you missed the Skis old-timers game this weekend
you missed one of the most improbable endings to a game
that I have ever seen. With the old timers in the
field with no outs and runners on second and third a
Skis batter hit a ground ball to third that ended the
game. That's right he grounded into the
5-2-6-1-1-U-1-4 triple play! For those of you that
don't read baseball scoring it went like this.
When the ball was grounded to third the runner on third
went for home. The third baseman (5) threw it to
the catcher(2) getting the runner into a run
down. The catcher threw to the shortstop (6) who
was covering third and he threw back to the pitcher (1)
who was then covering home. The pitcher tagged out
the runner attempting to score from third. One
out. Dumbfounded at the shenanigans between third
and home, the runner that was on second stood half way
between second and third. After tagging out the
first runner the pitcher then ran out to the second
runner, who was still standing there, and tagged him out
(1-U). Two outs. The batter that hit the
ball then tried to get to second in the excitement of
the events going on on the left side of the infield and
the pitcher threw the ball to the second baseman (4) who
applied the tag for the third out. Game
over. That was one for the ages.
