- The 2006 Sobieski Skis Fan Appreciation Banquet will be held Saturday, December 16th at the Sobieski Community Center starting at 5:00, meal at 6:00. All fans and former players are welcome, free of charge. Contact Brad Czech if you would like to attend.

- Congratulations to the Blue Earth Pirates on winning the 2006 Class C State Championship!


A home run in the top of the eighth tied the game for Union Hill.

The Skis State Tournament run has ended with a loss to the Union Hill Bulldogs 4-3 in eleven innings.  The game ended when Scott Geiger was called for interference on a slide into second base on a double play attempt.  There was one out in the bottom of the eleventh and Geiger was on first when Joe Thoma grounded a check swing back to the pitcher.  The pitcher threw to second for the second out and the throw to first was wild allowing Thoma to reach and seemingly keep the inning alive for the Skis.  However, the home plate umpire called Thoma out as a result of Geiger's slide into second base attempting to break up the double play.  It was a tough way to end a season for a team.

The game was resumed in the bottom of the second from a rain out the day earlier with the Skis leading, batting, a runner on first and no outs.  The Skis held the lead 2-0 on a 2-run homer from Jon Czech the previous day.  To start play today Beau Hanowski sacrificed the runner to second which  was followed by a Brad Czech double scoring the run and putting the Skis up 3-0.  The Skis had trouble getting anything going from that point on and couldn't manage any more runs.  Scott Geiger went the distance on the mound for the Skis in a two day event.

The Skis end the season with a division championship, a divisional playoff title, the region 8C title and a fourth place finish in the State Tournament, their best finish in the State Tournament to date.  Congratulations to the Skis on a great season!

Simon Waltman went the distance in the night cap for the Skis victory.

The Skis get another win in the State Tourney defeating the the Diamond Devils of Maple Plain 8-5 in a wild one.  Fueled by a number of errors, hit batters, and walks from the Maple Plain pitching the Skis built a 7-0 lead before giving a few runs back in the eight and ninth with a few errors of their own.

The Skis play the Union Hill Bulldogs for the second time in the tourney in an elimination game tomorrow at 1:30 in Miesville.  The Skis beat the Bulldogs 3-1 in the third round of the State Tournament.

Pinch runner Peter Suska is thrown in at the plate in the bottom of the fifth.

The Skis drop their first game of the State Tournament to a very good Blue Earth team.  The final was 5-3 when a ninth inning rally came up short.  

The Skis fell behind in the top of the sixth 1-0 on an error by the pitcher Jason King when the Pirate batter bunted one back to the mound on a squeeze play with two outs.  King bobbled the ball before throwing to first giving the batter just enough time to reach safely and the run to score.  Another Skis error in the top of the seventh helped the Pirates score two more making the score 3-0, Blue Earth.  The Skis got two back in the bottom of the inning on a big 2-run double by Jon Czech.  Not to be out done, the Pirates answered right back scoring another two runs in the top of the eighth with a couple hits and a walk and a sacrifice fly.  After a scoreless bottom of the eight and top of the ninth the Skis needed three in the last half inning to extend the game.

The inning started with two batters in a row being hit by a pitch, Aaron Hennes and Nathan Olson were plunked putting runners on first and second with no outs.  Jon Czech came to the plate and lined a base hit to left center which plated Hennes and moved Olson to second.  After a strike out, draftee Scott Geiger came to the plate with one out and the runners still on first and second.  Scott hit a high fly ball to right center that looked like it was going to be caught and Olson was set to tag up from second to third when the ball dropped between the two fielders.  That loaded the bases with one out.  The game ended in the next at bat when Joe Thoma hit a grounder back to the pitcher who started the 1-2-3 double play.

The Skis will now play the Maple Plain Diamond Devils in an elimination game tomorrow night at 7:30 in Miesville.  The Skis lost to the Diamond Devils earlier this year in the Coors Hamburg Classic by the score of 1-0 in 10 innings.

- The Skis win again!  They squeak by the Bulldogs of Union Hill in a good game, 3-1.  Draftee Jason King went the distance on the mound to notch the win and Joe Thoma had the big blow at the plate for the Skis.  Joe hit a 2-run homer to left in the top of the fourth to put the Skis up 3-1.

Up next for the Skis are the Blue Earth Pirates next Friday, September 1st at 5:00 pm in Miesville.

- The Skis win again, throwing another shut out and giving up only three hits.  This time the final was 7-0.  Draftee Jason King pitched the first seven innings and Nathan Olson came it to close it out in the eighth.  They scattered another thirteen hits in the game with the big one coming off the bat of Jon Czech.  He blasted a two run homer in the top of the sixth to give the Skis seven runs and close out the scoring.

The Skis now play the winner of Essig and Union Hill at 5:00 pm on Sunday the 27th in Red Wing.  They are also into the double elimination portion of the tournament.  More to come.

- The Skis advance in the State Tournament by beating the Winsted Wildcats 10-0 in seven innings.  Simon Waltman went the distance for the Skis on the mound and Jason King hit a big three run homer.  The Skis knocked 14 hits in the shortened game.  Up next are the St. Francis Saints once again in Miesville at 5:00 pm, tomorrow night.

- The Czech brothers put up a fight, but neither could catch Simon Waltman for last weeks Ski MVP.  See the voting results and read the comments here.

- The Skis and Brewers get into State Tournament action tomorrow night.  Be sure to head down to Miesville to cheer on the Region 8C representatives.  The action gets underway at 5:00 pm.  Of course if you can't make it to the games you can listen to them both on KLTF radio 960 AM (the Pierz game will also be on KMFL 94.1 FM).

- The Skis will play the Winsted Wildcats (19-16) in the first game of the State Tournament.  The Pierz Brewers get the Hamburg Hawks (19-7).

- The Skis drafted pitcher/catcher Scott Geiger from the Buckman Billygoats to go along with previous draftees Jason King (Randall) and Matt Gohl (Royalton) for State Tournament play.

- There was a slight miscalculation by myself in the number of Skis all tourney players.  There were four + King.  I mistakenly left out Jon Czech.  It has been corrected.

The Skis are the Region 8C Champions!
 Sobieski beat the Pierz Brewers 7-2 in the championship game this afternoon to hang another banner (see it to the left).  The Brewers beat Buckman 2-0 earlier in the day to advance to the final game.  This is the Skis third Region championship in the last six years, winning in 2004 and 2001 as well.  

Four Skis and one draftee were named to the all tournament team including the tournament MVP, Simon WaltmanBeau Hanowski, Nathan Olson, and Jon Czech join Simon as all tournament players as does draftee Jason King.

The Skis now advance to the State tournament next weekend with a game against the Region 7C runner up in Miesville on Saturday at 5:00 pm.  The Brewers also advance to State where they will play the Region 7C champion in Miesville at 7:30 pm.

- Updated the VL Playoff statistics.  I'd just like to point out one thing that was pointed out to me.  The three teams that sent in playoff stats are the three teams still playing.  I guess more teams should have participated and they might have done better in the playoffs.  Also, next week will be the last week of updates for the playoff stats page.  My thanks to those who sent in stats not only in the playoffs, but during the regular season as well.  A special thanks to the Billygoats and Brewers for keeping it up through the playoffs.

- The Pierz Brewers play the Buckman Billygoats at 1:00 in Avon this Saturday in a state tournament qualifying game.  The Skis will take on the winner at 4:00 for state tournament seeding.  If you can't take in the action in Avon be sure to listen to KLTF radio 960 AM where once again both games will be heard.

- Sobieski will play a Region 7C representative in the first round of the upcoming state tournament in Miesville. In Region 7C Hamburg has already clinched a spot in state. Winsted and Mayer are playing in a state qualifying game this weekend, with the winner playing Hamburg for seeding.

- Region 8C tournament action resumes today in Avon with the Upsala Blue Jays taking on the host Avon Lakers in game one and the St. Stephen Steves battling the Buckman Billygoats in game two.  Both games are elimination games.  Head on over to Avon to catch the games, and if you can't make it to the games be sure to tune into KLTF radio 960 AM for all your Victory League action.

- Jason King, draftee form the Randall Cubs, won last weeks Ski MVP honors by a wide margin.  Ironically, this is his fourth Ski MVP honor in a limited role which is more than some regular Skis.  The voting wasn't a shut out though.  See who else got a vote and read the comments here.

- If you missed the Skis old-timers game this weekend you missed one of the most improbable endings to a game that I have ever seen.  With the old timers in the field with no outs and runners on second and third a Skis batter hit a ground ball to third that ended the game.  That's right he grounded into the 5-2-6-1-1-U-1-4 triple play!  For those of you that don't read baseball scoring it went like this.  When the ball was grounded to third the runner on third went for home.  The third baseman (5) threw it to the catcher(2) getting the runner into a run down.  The catcher threw to the shortstop (6) who was covering third and he threw back to the pitcher (1) who was then covering home.  The pitcher tagged out the runner attempting to score from third.  One out.  Dumbfounded at the shenanigans between third and home, the runner that was on second stood half way between second and third.  After tagging out the first runner the pitcher then ran out to the second runner, who was still standing there, and tagged him out (1-U).  Two outs.  The batter that hit the ball then tried to get to second in the excitement of the events going on on the left side of the infield and the pitcher threw the ball to the second baseman (4) who applied the tag for the third out.  Game over.  That was one for the ages.

- The Skis get back into league action this weekend with two big games at home.  Today it's the St. Mathias Devils who lead the North division with an 8-3 record.  Be sure to make it out to the ballpark to see the game, but if you can't make it tune into KLTF radio (960 AM) as it's the game of the week.  Tomorrow the Skis host the Falcons in a important divisional game.  With three teams at the top of the West division standings all within a game of each other the title could come down to a tie breaker.  Divisional record could play a part in that.

- Not only was Isaac Smieja 4-5 at the plate last week he is two for two in Ski MVP voting.  He took this weeks honors in a landslide vote.  It wasn't a shutout, however.  See who else got votes here.  This is only the second time a player has opened the season with consecutive MVP wins.  The last time was in 2003 by  Brad Czech.

- It's that time of year again.  Time to rank the Victory League teams in the 2006 pre-season poll.  The poll will be open thru March and the results posted in early April.  One one vote per person per day will be counted.

- The latest poll had varying opinions, but the final tally says you like the Timberwolves the best.  See the numbers and comments here.

- The Skis tournament spot has been filled by the Weber Group Rocks, a class A team out of Plymouth that should provide some good competition.  They last appeared in the Skis tournament in 2003 taking 4th place.

February 17th, 2006
- There is an immediate opening in the Skis Tournament for 2006 due to a team backing out.  This is a chance that you won't want to pass up.  The games will be played on June 17th and 18th in Sobieski and the times are posted here.  It's a round robin format with each team playing three games.  Best record wins, ties are broken by total runs scored.

- As mentioned sixteen days ago, the Skis will be participating in the 2006 Hamburg Coors Classic this coming June.  Now we have the list of competition.  They include the Raymond Rockets, Plato Blue Jays, Maple Plain Diamond Devils, New Germany Dutchmen, Montgomery Mallards, Waconia Lakers and of course the Hamburg Hawks.  It sounds like a great field.  Be sure to make the trip South to cheer on the Skis.

- The Sobieski Skis will be playing in the 2006 Hamburg Coors Classic on June 9th, 10th, and 11th. It is an 8 team tournament.
- Hamburg is a host of the 2007 State Amateur Baseball Tournament.
- The 2006 Skis Tourney will be held the weekend of June 17th and 18th.
