- This weekend marks the first weekend of the region 8C tournament.  Eight teams, eight games, two days, two eliminated, six survive to play on.  It can almost be likened to the first two days of the NCAA basketball tournament, only better.

It's wall-to-wall ball.  Starting at 11:00 am on Saturday morning there will be baseball nearly twenty-four of the following thirty-six hours.  Making it better is the fact that there are no "Cinderella" teams for a #1 seeds to walk all over.  It's the best of the best locking up in two grueling days of hard fought battle.

Anyone of this years participants could come out on top.  The St. Stephen Steves (11-2), Lastrup Lakers (11-2), Sobieski Skis (10-3), and the Pierz Brewers (10-3) boast some pretty lofty regular season records, but the others are no slouch.  Holdingford (8-5) is on a nice winning streak, taking out perennial region qualifier Avon in their road to the tourney.  Randall (8-5) comes to the table with one of the most dominant players not only in the Victory League in Jason King, but also in the state as proven in the past couple years.  Don't let the 8-5 records of St. Mathias and Fort Ripley fool you either.  They both survived the hard fought North division where three quality teams beat up on each other during league play.

Expect games where one run will be cheered like it's the most important run of the season and a two run lead will feel like five.  The atmosphere in Pierz will be electric, the weather steamy, and the teams focused on one goal.  Winning one of the toughest regions in the state and a berth to the 2007 State Tournament.

So, if you're a fan of one of the teams, or just want to see some great amateur baseball make a beeline to Pierz Saturday and Sunday.  If you can't make the games you can hear all the action as it unfolds courtesy of  KLTF radio (960 AM).
