St. Stephen 7, Sobieski 1
Sobieski, MN - 8/9/2008
The
St. Stephen Steves earned their second consecutive trip
to the Class C state tournament with a 7-1 win over
Sobieski Saturday in the Region 8C tournament. Winning
pitcher Jake Eichten (a draftee from Opole) beat
Sobieski for the second time in the tournament. The
only run he surrendered was a first inning solo homer by
Jon Czech. Neil Theisen delivered a two run
single in the top of the second to put the Steves ahead
2-1 and they just built their lead from there. They
scored two more in the third on a ground out and a wild
pitch. Tj Raab's sacrafice fly in the fifth
made it 5-1. Another RBI single by Theisen in
the sixth gave the Steves a 6-1 lead and Chris Ebnet
capped the scoring with a lead-off homer in the top of
the ninth.

Sobieski, MN - 8/3/2008
Sobieski
jumped ahead of Avon with four runs in the top of the
first on just one hit. Jon Czech delivered a sacrifice
fly to make it 1-0. With the bases loaded,
Avon pitcher Nick Locnikar hit Brad Czech and Isaac
Smieja with consecutive pitches to force in two more
runs making it 3-0. Ben Hanowski added a run
scoring double to make it 4-0. Nate Olson's
rbi single in the third gave the Ski's a 5-0 lead. Avon
got on the board on a Gary Deters run scoring single in
the bottom of the third making it 5-1. Sobieski
exploded for five runs in the fourth. Jason
King led off with a homerun, Jeff Thoma added a sacrifice
fly, Aaron Hennes drove in two more with a double and
Nate Olson capped the scoring with a single making it
10-1 after three and a half innings. The
final runs were produced on Gary Deters two run homer in
the seventh for Avon, making it 10-3. That
turned out to be the final score. Jason King
went five innings for the win, and Tyler Jendro went the
final four. Locnikar took the loss.

Sobieski 7, Fort Ripley 2

The
Sobieski Ski's defeated the Fort Ripley Rebels 7-2 in
the Region 8C tournament Saturday in Sobieski. The
Ski's got the scoring started with a two run single by
Aaron Hennes in the top of the third. Later
in the inning, Nate Olson doubled in the third run of
the frame. Fort Ripley came back with a run
on a Sobieski error in the bottom of the third. The
Rebels made it 3-2 in the fourth on an rbi single by
Rhett Williamson. Back-to-back two out rbi
singles in the sixth by Brad Czech and Isaac Smieja gave
the Ski's a 5-2 lead after four and a half innings. Nate
Olson added an rbi single in the seventh and the Ski's
got their final run when Joe Thoma scored on a groundout
in the eighth. Simon Waltman earned his second win of
the tournament by going eight innings, scattering ten
hits and striking out four.

Pierz, MN - 7/27/2008
The
St. Stephen Steves defeated Sobieski 5-2 Sunday night in
the winner's bracket of the Region 8C tournament in
Pierz. The Ski's Jason King (draftee from
Randall) led off the second with a homer to make it 1-0
Sobieski. The Steves tied it in the top of
the sixth as Dusty Upgren scored on the back end of a
double steal. Jon Czech gave the Ski's back
the lead with a lead-off homer in the seventh to make it
2-1. St. Stephen quickly tied it in the top
of the eighth as Neil Theisen hit the first pitch over
the wall in left to make it 2-2. The Steves
went on to get two more runs in the eighth on a
sacrafice fly by Dusty Upgren and an rbi single from
Jake Fiedler giving St. Stephen a 4-2 lead. The
Steves added a run in the ninth on a Chris Ebnet two out
rbi double. Jake Eichten worked a 1-2-3 ninth
to finish things off. Eichten pitched a
complete game five hitter. The draftee from
Opole struck out three. It's the second time
Eichten has beaten the Ski's this year. He
shut them out earlier this summer 2-0 as Opole won at
Sobieski.

In
a back and forth game in the opening round of the Region
8C tournament, the Sobieski Ski's got a lead off homer
from Joe Thoma in the bottom of the eighth to edge
Buckman
6-5. Sobieski took a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the
seventh on a sacrafice fly from Nate Olson and a solo
homer from Jon Czech, but Buckman got a two out, 2-run
double from Todd Robinson in the top of the eighth to
tie it at 5-5. Simon Waltman struck out
twelve over eight innings to get the win. Nate
Olson came on in relief in the ninth and the Goats
loaded the bases, but Olson registered a strikeout to
preserve the win.

won the West Playoff title with an 8-6 win over Upsala
Sunday. Brad Czech hit a 3-run homer in the
first inning and the Ski's never trailed. Simon
Waltman pitched all nine innings for the win for
Sobieski. Upsala threatened in the ninth,
loading the bases with two outs, but Waltman got a
strikeout to end the game.

Czech's 2-run homer in the bottom of the sixth broke a
6-6 tie and the Sobieski Ski's went on to beat the
Upsala Blue Jays 13-6 Saturday in the first round of the
West Division playoffs. Simon Waltman pitched
all nine innings for the win and also drove in two runs
with a double in a 6-run second inning for the Ski's. Aaron
Hennes hit a 2-run homer in the seventh for Sobieski. Upsala's
biggest inning was the second, when they plated four
runs. BJ Lange's homer leading off the top of
the sixth momentarily tied the game at 6-6. Joe
Primus belted a pair of solo homers for Upsala.

inning and Sobieski went on to beat Upsala 10-5 Sunday. Simon
Waltman got the win, working five innings, and also doubled
twice, including a two run double in that fifth inning. Ben
Hanowski homered and Jon Czech stayed dialed in with a
3-5, two RBI performance. Matt Swanson and
Scott Biniek homered for Upsala. The Ski's
finish in first in the West with a 9-4 record, while
Upsala ends up fourth with a 5-8 mark.

Czech capped his huge weekend for Sobieski by going 4-4
with a double and four rbi's as the Ski's worked over
St. Wendel 14-1 in seven innings. For the
weekend, Czech went 7-9 with two homers, a double and
eleven rbi's. Brad Czech went the first five
innings, shutting out the Saints on one hit. The
Ski's blew the game open with a seven run fifth inning,
making the score 14-0 at that point.

this weekend with a 4-2 win at Avon Sunday. Brad
Czech's RBI single in the fourth broke a 2-2 tie and the
Ski's went on to post a 4-2 victory over the Lakers. Simon
Waltman pitched a complete game and also went 2-4 while
Logan Kalis drove in a pair of runs for the Ski's. Among
the nine hits for Avon was a hit for Jordan Bredeck, who
leaves for Africa Monday on a military tour. Good
luck Jordan and stay safe!!!

In
Holdingford Saturday the Express starter Dylan Pittman
held Sobieski without a hit through five innings, but
the Ski's broke through in a big way in the 6th, scoring
five runs. Jon Czech highlighted the frame
with a 2-run homer. Holdingford came back to
tie the game at 5-5 with three runs in the eighth. However,
the Ski's were able to plate two runs in the top of the
ninth to go up 7-5. Nate Olson made his first
pitching appearance since last years shoulder surgery a
memorable one as he got a save with two strikeouts in
the bottom of the ninth. That saved the win
for Sobieski starter Brad Czech, who worked the first
eight innings.

Eichten pitched a five hit shutout for Opole and Nick
Bialka hit a 2-run homer in the first inning as the
Bears blanked Sobieski 2-0 Sunday. Eichten struck
out five and kept the ball low in the zone, allowing him
to get fifteen ground ball outs. Eichten was
supported by outstanding defense, most notably in the
sixth inning when Sobieski had runners at first and
second with two outs. Nate Olson hit what
appeared to be a game-tying extra base hit to the left
center field gap when John Pilarski made a head first
diving catch for the third out and preserve the shutout
for Opole. Simon Waltman went the distance for the
Ski's, striking out six, but the Bialka homer in the
first was enough to do him, and Sobieski, in.

In
the 2nd game of a home-and-home double-header this
weekend, Sobieski ten runned the Riverdogs for the
second consecutive day. The Ski's continued
their offensive explosion with another eighteen hit
attack and defeated the Riverdogs 13-3 in seven innings
Sunday.
Jon Czech made his first starting appearance of the year
and went the distance, striking out three. He
also hit a home run and drove in three runs at the
plate. The Riverdogs played the Ski's tough,
trailing only 4-3 going to the bottom of the sixth, but
Sobieski banged out six hits in the sixth and scored
seven runs to go up 11-3 and then added two more runs in
the seventh to end the game. Sobieski
outscored Royalton 31-6 in the two games this weekend.

Sobieski 18, Royalton 3 (8)

Sobieski
flexed their muscle without two of their regulars in the
lineup as Jon Czech and Aaron Hennes had the day off. Brad
Czech blasted a 3-run homer in the fourth inning to give
Sobieski a 4-0 lead over Royalton Saturday and the Ski's
went on to cruise to an 18-3 win in eight innings over
the previously undefeated Riverdogs.
Ben Hanowski had a huge day at the plate for the Ski's,
as he crushed a 2-run homer in the sixth, drilled a RBI
triple in the seventh and added a run scoring double in
the eighth. Simon Waltman got the win,
working the first seven innings with Russ Klimmek
finishing up in the eighth.

Stephen led 6-0 after two innings until Jon Czech hit a
2-run homer for Sobieski in the sixth to make it 6-2. Sobieski
added four runs in the eighth to tie it at 6-6. In
the top of the tenth, Jake Kluver doubled home Joe Thoma
to make it 7-6. In the bottom of the tenth,
Travis Phelps doubled in a run to make it 7-7. In
the bottom of the 11th, Neil Theisenhit hit a 2-out
double and Travis Phelps followed with a game winning
double to win it 8-7 for the Steves.

After
Sobieski scored twice in the top of the third, Jason
King hit a 3-run homer in the bottom of the third and
Randall tacked on another run in the inning to complete
a 4-2 win for the Cubs over the Ski's. Both
King and Simon Waltman pitched complete games with King
striking out three and getting the win.

innings for the win. The Hanowski brothers,
