Game 5
Brainerd 7, Sobieski 5
Avon, MN - 8/15/2009
In
a state play in game in the Region 8C Tournament in Avon
Saturday, rain delayed the start of the
Sobieski/Brainerd game by an hour and twenty four
minutes. Once play began, the two teams
played a scoreless first three innings. Brainerd
broke through in the top of the fourth when John Riewer
led off by reaching on an error, Jason Roepke followed
with a ground rule double to right and Jamie Ladouceur
hit a sacrafice fly to center to make it 1-0. Ben
Kepner followed with his first hit of the tournament, an
rbi double to make it 2-0. An out later,
Brandon Wolf doubled in another run as the Braves plated
three runs on three doubles and were aided by three
Ski's errors in the fourth.
It stayed 3-0 until the bottom of the 7th when the Ski's
loaded the bases with no one out against Braves starter
Tony Whitlock. John Riewer relieved Whitlock. He
gave up a sacrifice fly to Joe Thoma to make it 3-1. Andrew
Lange then delivered an rbi single to make it 3-2. Sobieski
left the tying runner at third base in the bottom of the
seventh.
In the top of the eighth, Jason Roepke led off with a
home run just inside the left field foul pole to make it
4-2. Later in the frame, Brandon Wolf singled
in Ben Kepner to make it
5-2. The Ski's tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the
eighth as the first two Sobieski batters reached base
via errors. Jason King singled in Beau
Hanowski to make it 5-3. After an Isaac
Smieja sacrifice bunt moved runners to second and third
with one out, Nate Olson hit a deep fly ball to right,
scoring pinch runner Jeff Thoma to make it 5-4 with two
outs and King standing at second base. With
the rains continuing to fall, Joe Thoma came up. He
was 0-2 on the day and 0-9 in the tournament, but hit a
little flair off the handle on a 3-2 pitch into shallow
left field to score King and tie the game.
In the top of the ninth, Riewer led off with a single up
the middle. He was pinch ran for
by Beau Mertens. Roepke picked up his third
hit of the day, a single down the right field line,
chasing Mertens to third, so the Braves had runners at
the corners with no one out. Ski's pitcher
Nate Olson, who was in relief of starter Jason King,
uncorked a wild pitch, scoring Mertens to make it 6-5
with Roepke advancing to second. Jamie
Ladouceur then doubled to center, scoring Roepke to make
it 7-5. In the bottom of the ninth, Riewer
got lead off batter Aaron Hennes to fly to center. Jake
Kluver then singled. But Riewer got Beau
Hanowski to foul out to the catcher, and got the final
out on a Jon Czech ground out to first.

Game 3
Sobieski 7, Upsala 6
Avon, MN - 8/8/2009
The
Sobieski Ski's stayed alive in the Region 8C Tournament
in Avon Saturday with a 7-6 come-from-behind win over
the Upsala Blue Jays. The Jays struck first,
getting a 2-out, 2-run homer from Joe Bartkowicz in the
first inning. The Ski's countered with Beau
Hanowski's rbi double in the bottom of the third to make
it 2-1. John Fuchs came through for Upsala
with a 2-out rbi single in the fourth to put the Jays
ahead 3-1. Upsala added to the lead with a
2-out, 2-run homer from Ben Burggraff in the seventh to
give the Jays a 5-1 lead.
Sobieski was helped by a pair of infield errors by
Upsala to start the bottom of the seventh leading to two
runs. Nate Olson doubled in a run to make it
5-2 and Isaac Smieja followed with a sacrifice fly to
make the score 5-3 in favor of Upsala after seven
innings. However, a 2-out rbi single by Chad
Primus in the eighth made it 6-3 Jays. All
six runs by Upsala were produced by 2-out hits.
Trailing 6-3 entering the bottom of the eighth, the
Ski's Greg Aker worked a lead off walk from Jays starter
Matt Swanson. Beau Hanowski followed with a
single to right. Jon Czech then drilled a
single to right to load the bases with no one out. Simon
Waltman pinch ran for Czech at first. That
brought up Jason King, who prior to this at-bat, was 0-3
during the game and 0-9 in the tournament. King
smoked a single to left that plated two runs, making it
6-5 with runners at first and second and no one
out. BJ Lange came in to relieve Swanson. He
gave up a bunt single to Jake Kluver to load the bases
and put the tying run at third and the go ahead run at
second. Nate Olson fouled out to first for
the first out of the inning, but Lange followed
that with a walk to Isaac Smieja to score Waltman and
tie the game at 6-6.
Lange struck out pinch hitter Joe Thoma for the second
out, but the next batter, Aaron Hennes, hit the
first pitch he saw from Lange into left field to score
Jason King with the fourth run of the inning, putting
Sobieski ahead 7-6. Nate Olson came on to
relieve starter Jason King to begin the ninth. Olson
struck out pinch-hitter Brady Burggraff, then fanned Ben
Burggraff for the second out. After Dustin
Biniek reached on an error to get the potential tying
run on base, Olson got Scott Biniek to hit a bouncer to
shortstop Jake Kluver, who made the flip to second for
the game ending force out. King only struck
out one while walking three over eight innings to get
the win while Swanson was tagged with the loss for
Upsala.

Sobieski 18, Flensburg 0
Flensburg, MN - 6/6/2009
Sobieski's
Andrew Lange nearly became the Victory League's version
of Johnny Vander Meer Saturday. Lange threw a
no-hitter in his previous start against Flensburg on
Memorial Day, and came within one hit by Eli Ploof of
duplicating that feat as the Sobieski Ski's improved to
8-0 with an 18-0 win over Flensburg in seven innings
Saturday. Lange allowed just three runners
all day as he walked two and surrendered only the one
hit. Joe Rydeen had his first 3- hit day of
the season for Sobieski and Aaron Hennes homered and
doubled to lead an 18-hit Ski's attack.
