The
Sobieski Ski's were eliminated from the 2010 Class C
Tournament in Willmar Sunday as they dropped a 5-4
decision to the New Ulm Brewers.
The Ski's got a run in the first
on Jon Czech's
RBI single
that scored Greg Aker. The Brewers put
three
runs on the board in the
second
inning on a pair of singles and
two
sacrifices and
one
error. They tacked on
two
more runs in the
third
on
four
singles to make it 5-1 after
two and a half
innings. Sobieski got a run scoring double by
Jon Czech with
two
outs in the bottom of the
third,
scoring Greg Aker from
first
base with
two
outs to make it 5-2.
It stayed that way until the
eighth
when Sobieski got another RBI double
from Czech, this one kicked up chalk down the left field
line, making it 5-3. In the bottom of the
ninth,
pinch-hitter Josh Wenzel got a leadoff walk, went to
second
on a passed ball. After a pop out to
second,
Wenzel took
third
on a wild pitch. Andy Cook, a draftee from
Leavonworth, got Andrew Lange to ground out to
first
for the
second
out, with Wenzel scoring on the play making it 5-4. There
were
two
outs and the bases empty. Beau Hanowski then
walked before Jake Kluver grounded out to
first
to end the game. The Ski's finish the 2010
season with a record of 24-6.

Sobieski 10, Lastrup 9
Buckman, MN - 8/15/2010
The
Sobieski Ski's claimed their fifth Region 8C
Championship with a 10-9 win over Lastrup Sunday in
Buckman. In a see-saw game, the Ski's got a
two out, two run homer from Jon Czech in the top of the
first to grab an early lead. Lastrup
countered with five runs in the bottom of the first on a
Jeremy Monson RBI single and a grand slam from Jason
Sadlovsky.
The Ski's got a run in the second on Riley Hirsch's RBI
single to make it 5-3. Sobieski then took the
lead with three runs in the third as Joe Rydeen had a
two out RBI single, followed up by Josh Wenzel's
two run hit, making it 6-5 in favor of the Ski's. Greg
Aker's two out RBI double in the fourth extended the
Ski's lead to 7-5.
Lastrup tied the game in the bottom of the fifth on
back-to-back RBI doubles by Rick Schlieman and Dustin
Schmaltz to make it 7-7. John Fuchs, a
draftee from Upsala, relieved Sobieski starter Simon
Waltman after the Schmaltz double with one out and the
two men on in a tie game. Fuchs got a pop up
to short and a strikeout to preserve the tie. Each
team plated a run in the seventh, with the Ski's getting
an RBI single from Josh Wenzel to make it 8-7. It
was the 15 year old's third hit and third RBI of the
title game. Lastrup got that run right back
in the bottom of the seventh on Scott Janson's two out
RBI single. Lastrup ended up leaving the
bases loaded in the seventh inning against Fuchs.
After two quick outs in the top of the eighth for
Sobieski, Jake Kluver doubled to center and Greg Aker
slammed a line drive home run over Highway 25 in right
field to make it 10-8. In the bottom of the
eighth, Lastrup strung together three consecutive two
out single to score a run, as Dustin Schmaltz drove in
Nate Janson to make it 10-9. But for the second
inning in a row, Lastrup left the bases loaded against
Fuchs.
In the bottom of the ninth, Jamie Litke reached on a one
out infield single for Lastrup, putting the tying run on
base and bringing the potential winning run to the
plate, but Fuchs got Todd Robinson to ground into a
game-ending 4-6-3 double play. Fuchs earned
the win with four and two-thirds innings of relief. Reggie
Litke took the loss for Lastrup.

Region 8C Playoffs
Sobieski 7, Avon 2
Buckman, MN - 8/15/2010
The
Sobieski Ski's avenged a defeat to Avon from the second
round of the Region 8C Tournament in Buckman Sunday with
a 7-2 victory over the Lakers. The win
clinched a spot in next weekend's Class C State
Tournament in Wilmar. The loss eliminated
Avon from the tourney.
Aaron Hennes went 3-3 with a pair of RBI singles and Joe
Rydeen drove in three runs as Sobieski got a combined
five RBI's from their number eight and nine hitters. Andrew
Lange picked up his second win of the tournament,
pitching five and a third innings. He left
with one out in the sixth and the bases loaded and the
Ski's holding a 3-1 lead. Nate Olson came on
and got a fly out to shallow center and a foul out to
first to end that Avon threat. It was one of
three times in the game that Avon left the bases loaded. Olson
ended up getting the save, working the final three and
two thirds innings to preserve the win.

The
Sobieski Ski's held on to defeat Fort Ripley 4-3
Saturday in Buckman in a Region 8C elimination game. The
Ski's led 4-0 going to the bottom of the ninth, but the
Rebels put together another late game rally in this one,
as Rhett Williamson led off with a single, Brett Kramer
walked to put runners at first and second with no outs. Nic
Jelacie popped to short for the first out. Jason
Sather then slapped a single up the middle to score
Williamson to make it 4-1 with runners still at first
and second. Ray Austin came up and drilled
his second double of the game, a gaper to right-center
that scored Kramer making it 4-2 and putting the tying
run at second with one out. The Rebels pinch
ran for Austin, putting in Rob Veith Sr. at second base. Bill
Sather popped out to the shortstop in shallow left for
the second out. That brought up veteran Curt
Veith. Veith lined the first pitch he saw
from Jason King into right field to score Jason Sather,
making it 4-3, and Ski's right fielder Greg Aker's throw
home was in time to just get a sliding Rob Veith at the
plate for the third out to end the ballgame.
For Sobieski, Jason King earned his second straight
complete game win. Jake Kluver led the
offense, going 4-4 with a walk and driving in two runs. Sobieski
scored twice in second on a groundout by Riley Hirsch
and a single by Kluver. Kluver's perfectly
placed bunt single in the fourth drove in Aaron Hennes
with the Ski's third run and Jon Czech lifted a
sacrifice fly to center in the ninth to make it 4-0. That
turned out to be a huge insurance run for Sobieski, as
the Rebels ninth inning rally fell just short.

The
Sobieski Ski's beat the Royalton Riverdogs 10-3 Sunday
in Buckman to advance in the Region 8C Tournament, and
in doing so, eliminating Royalton. The Ski's
awoke from an offensive slump through the first two
games, where they scored a combined five runs on eleven
hits. They broke things open with a five run fourth
inning to make it 6-1, then tacked on four more runs in
the fifth.
Winning pitcher Jason King pitched a complete game, and
the draftee from Randall also homered for the second
consecutive contest. His blast leading off
the second tied things at 1-1. Jon Czech
drove in three runs with a two-run double and a sac fly
to help lead a twelve hit attack for Sobieski. Royalton
scattered four hits, all of them singles. Andrew
Gurbada went 2-4 for Royalton.

In
the winner's bracket of the Region 8C Tournament in
Pierz Saturday, the Avon Lakers got a pair of solo
homers and a RBI single from Jeff Swenson and Troy
Wunderlich was effectively wild as Avon defeated
Sobieski 5-2. Wunderlich went eigth+ innings,
exiting after giving up a leadoff single to pinch-hitter
Isaac Smieja in the bottom of the ninth. Nic
Locnickar came in and nailed down the save.
The Lakers got a run in the first thanks to two Ski's
throwing errors. Riley Hirsch tied the game
at 1-1 with a RBI groundout in the second. Jeff
Swenson homered to left with two outs in the fourth to
put Avon ahead 2-1, but Jason King led off the bottom of
the fourth with a homer to tie it at 2-2.
Swenson singled in a run in the sixth to make it 3-2. That
inning provided the most controversial call of the game,
as Dusty Upgren of Avon was called out for runners
interference at first base after laying down an apparent
sacrifice bunt with runners at first and second and no
outs. The runner from second thought he had
scored on the play, but the umpires sent the two runners
back to their original bases and ruled Upgren out. Swenson
then singled to scored Taylor Holthaus.
Avon added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth,
as Swenson homered to lead things off, Gary Deters
followed with a double, and Deters eventually scored on
a sacrafice fly by Ricky Hendrickson to make it 5-2.
That turned out to be the final score.
Andrew Lange suffered the loss, going five and a third
innings. Nate Olson came on in relief and
struck out seven of the first eight men he faced, but
then gave up the two runs in the ninth.

Andrew
Lange threw a complete game two hitter with eleven
strikeouts as Sobieski beat Brainerd 3-1 in the first
game of the 2010 Region 8C Tournament at Pierz Legion
Park. Jon Czech singled home Aaron Hennes in
the bottom of the first to make it 1-0, and the Ski's
tacked on a pair of unearned runs in the fourth thanks
to three Braves errors and a Jake Kluver bunt single for
an RBI. The other run scored on the back end
of a double steal with Nate Olson scoring. Brainerd
got their lone run in the top of the fifth when Jason
Roepke led off with a double to left, advanced to third
on a passed ball, and scored on John Riewer's groundout
to first. Lange allowed only three base
runners in the game.

The
Sobieski Ski's earned the number one seed out of the
West heading into next weekend's Region 8C tournament in
Pierz thanks to their 8-1 win over Royalton Sunday. The
Ski's won convincingly despite collecting only four
hits.
They were aided by twelve walks issued by three
different Royalton pitchers. Sobieski led 2-0
after five and a half innings, then scored four times in
the sixth as Jon Czech had a 2-run double and Beau
Hanowski added an RBI single in the inning. Emil
Trutwin drove in the Riverdogs lone run with an RBI in
the seventh.
Andrew Lange got the win, pitching seven innings,
allowing one run on eight hits. Simon Waltman
went two shutout innings in relief.

Top
seeded Sobieski scored a run in the bottom of the eighth
to edge #3 Royalton 2-1 in the winner's bracket of the
West Division playoffs Sunday. The Ski's
scored an unearned run in the bottom of the second to go
ahead 1-0, and the game stayed that way as Joe Rydeen of
Sobieski and Cole Jendro of the Riverdogs worked in and
out of trouble to keep it a 1-0 game through seven
innings. Jendro issued seven walks but was
helped out by his defense, as the Riverdogs were able to
turn three double plays to keep the Ski's from adding to
their lead.
Royalton got the equalizer in the top of the eighth
against reliever Nate Olson as Paul Krebs led off with a
walk, followed by Andrew Gurbada's double to right to
put runners at second and third with no outs. Adam
Yourczek dropped a single into shallow right field to
score Krebs and tie the game at 1-1. Royalton
now had runners at the corners with no out. Olson
got Zach Lanners to line into a double play, with the
runner at first caught off the bag. That left
Gurbada at third with two outs, representing the go
ahead run. Olson got a strikeout to keep the game tied
after seven and a half innings.
The Ski's plated the game winner in the bottom of the
eighth as Brad Czech led off with a walk (his third of
the game) against new Riverdogs pitcher Pete Gleisner. Sam
Rydeen pinch ran for Czech. After a
strikeout, Riley Hirsch collected a single to move
Rydeen to second. Beau Hanowski flew out to
left for the second out, and then Jake Kluver doubled to
right to score Rydeen with the eventual game winning
run. At the tail end of that play, Riley
Hirsch tired to score from first base, but was called
out at home when the umpire ruled he never touched the
plate, and Royalton catcher Paul Krebs raced over to the
Ski's dugout to apply the tag on Hirsch for the final
out. Olson worked a 1-2-3 inning in the ninth
to end the game.

The
number one seed Sobieski Skis shutout the number four
seed Upsala Blue Jays 3-0 on Saturday in the first round
of the West Division playoffs. The Ski's got
all three of their runs in the bottom of the sixth as
Jake Kluver singled in a run, and Jon Czech hit a 2-run
homer. Andrew Lange was in control for
Sobieski, going all nine innings, striking out ten and
giving up just two hits in his shutout. The
game was delayed sixty-one minutes due to rain and
lightning after the bottom of the fourth.

The Sobieski Ski's ended the regular season
with a 3-1 win over Randall Saturday. The
Cubs scored a run in the top of the first, but three
Sobieski pitchers blanked Randall the rest of the way.
The Ski's tied the game in the fourth on an rbi single
by Simon Waltman, took the lead on Jon Czech's sac fly
in the fifth, and finished the scoring with a Nate Olson
rbi double in the seventh. Joe Rydeen started
for the Ski's and went four innings but got a
no-decision. Beau Hanowski picked up the win
with three shutout innings of middle relief. Nate
Olson went the final two innings on the hill for the
save.
Hanowski and Riley Hirsch each had two hits for
Sobieski. Kyle Peterschick had three hits,
including a double, for Randall. The Ski's
lost their season opener to Upsala, but won their final
twelve games to finish with the Victory League's best
record at 12-1. Randall ends up 9-4, good for
second in the West.

Flensburg by winning game two by a score of 4-3. The
win wrapped up another West Division regular season
title for the Ski's and earns them an automatic berth in
the upcoming Region 8C Tournament. Aaron
Hennes and Beau Hanowski each collected two hits,
including a double, to lead Sobieski. Joe
Rydeen got the win, going seven and a third innings. Jarrett
Waldoch went 2-4 with a double and drove in a run for
the Falcons.

Ski's Brad Czech hit a 2-run homer to make it 4-1. Sobieski
would go on to add four more runs in the seventh and
then tacked on two more in the eighth as they beat the
Falcons 10-1 in the first game of a home-and-home
doubleheader Saturday. Andrew Lange struck
out twelve over eight innings to get the win for
Sobieski. Jarret Waldoch had two hits
including a double and drove in a run for Flensburg.

Czech and Nate Olson blasted three run homers to lead
West leading Sobieski Skis to a 13-4 win at Upsala. Olson
had four hits and drove in five runs while Czech had
three hits and drove in four. Riley Hirsch
also had four hits with a double for the Ski's. Andrew
Lange got the win, limiting the Blue Jays to three runs
on nine hits while striking out eight.
For Upsala, Joe Bartkowicz had three hits including a
solo homer and Brady Burggraff also hit a solo shot. After
opening the season with a loss to the Blue Jays, the
Ski's have rattled off nine consecutive Victory League
wins.

King led of the bottom of the tenth with his second
homer of the game to make it 6-5, but winning pitcher
Nate Olson then got two groundouts and fly out to left
to preserve the come from behind win.

Smieja and Nate Olson led off the final frame with base
hits. That's when the wheels fell off for the
Bulldogs. Pierz committed three errors and
issued a walk, allowing the tying run to score and then
Aaron Hennes poked a run scoring single to give the Skis
a come-from-behind 5-4 win. All four runs in
the ninth scored without the Bulldogs registering an
out. Pete Herman and Paul Herman each hit a
2-run homer for Pierz.

In the seasoning opening exhibition game Sunday
at the Sobieski Ballpark the Skis beat the Fort Ripley
Rebels by a score of 14-11.
The Skis were led at the plate by left fielder Greg
Aker, who was 4-4 at the plate on the day, including a
home run, double, 4 runs scored, and a stolen base.
Skis center fielder Aaron Hennes went 2-5 at the plate
with 3 RBI including a 2-run home run in the 7th inning.
Nate Olson went 3-4 with 3 runs scored and 2 RBI.
Jon Czech went 1-3 with a 3-run home run to right in the
8th inning. He also scored 3 runs. Joe
Rydeen went 2-4 with a double and 2 RBI.
Skis pitchers Simon Waltman, Nate Olson, and Brad Czech
each threw two innings and Joe Rydeen pitched the
final three.
Curt Veith and Tim Veith each homered for the
Rebels. Jim Kramer went 3-4, and Andy Waletzko went
2-4 with 3 runs scored. Ray Austin went 2-4 and
Jason Sather went 2-4 with 2 runs scored. The
Rebels finished with 13 hits on the day.
